Pouncey Feels the Momentum Change
Posted Nov 7, 2010
Three weeks ago the Florida football squad was desperate for something good to happen. Fresh off of a three game losing streak, the Gators were reeling and needing some answers, especially on offense. The dismay has turned into a bit of delight as the Florida offense has opened up a bit, scored plenty, and the Gators have won two SEC games in a row. Mike Pouncey is feeling the change in momentum.
was all smiles after
55-14 on Saturday in Nashville. Even with recent offensive tweaks that showed well against
, there were plenty of things that could go wrong with a road game, an early start time, cold weather, and more. However, the Gators looked pretty prepared in all aspects of the team.
“Big win,” Pouncey beamed when asked about the game. “We enjoyed it and played great in every aspect of our team, offense, defense, and special teams.
“That was our biggest key, to stay away from distraction. We don’t usually play good on early games, but this is one we really needed. The coaches had us going all morning, we were up all morning. We just did what we needed to do.”
Despite the overall performance of all phases of the team, the offense continued its lackluster start only posting one first down in its first two possessions. It is a pattern that has stuck with this Gator offense throughout the entire 2010 season.
“We can’t fault anyone for that,” Pouncey said. “It sucks that we struggle in the first two series because we want to put points on the board, but we are happy to have the ‘W’.”
There is a visible boost in the vibe of the team and especially the offense and it is something that seems contagious and that they can build from.
“We’ve been waiting for it all year and I think the up-tempo offense has helped us out tremendously,” Pouncey said of the offense’s new found success. “We picked up a lot of momentum. I think it is all on Coach Addazio. He brought up the idea of going to the up-tempo offense and he helped us out a lot. We have been great the last two weeks, and now we have to do it again.”
One focal point of Saturday’s game was the emergence of quarterback/athlete
. Reed threw for 120 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 92 on the day. He looked explosive on the field whatever he was doing with the ball.
“He’s looked great at practice,” Pouncey said of Reed. “He’s a great player, and just trying to find his position. We are just trying to find ways of getting him on the field.
Another boost has come from star running back/ receiver
. Rainey has provided a spark on offense and special teams and could really be considered the player of the game in each of Florida’s last two wins. Rainey returned from suspension in the last two games.
“Like I told you last week and all year long, he is the best player on the team,” Pouncey said of Rainey. “He shows it week in and week out. We are just glad to have him back.”
The major goal of every Gator football season is to win the SEC title and to do that Florida will have to first win this week at home against
. The winner of the game represents the SEC’s Eastern Division in Atlanta to play for the 2010 SEC Championship.
“It’s the biggest game of the year,” Pouncey said of the South Carolina game. “If we win we are in, if we lose we are out. Our total focus is on one game.”
“We turn it into a one game season. If we win, it will be the best feeling ever. It is going to take a lot of leadership. We need to go into this game 70 strong. We will need everyone back healthy and keep playing good like we are.”
Ten days ago none of that seemed possible, now the chance is there and the team is feeling better about itself. Still, there is a lot to be proved and it all will come to a head in a week.
“We aren’t satisfied,” Pouncey said. “We hated losing those three games and stumbled a little bit. We are back on track, but still not satisfied. Once we get through this game we can talk about (playing for the championship).
