College Football Musings – Week 13
Posted Nov 29, 2010
The BCS caught a break when Nevada took out Boise State. Another former Gator becomes bowl eligible and the SEC Bowl picture gets at least a little clearer. Meanwhile, Vandy needs a coach for the second time this year and Miami fires the guy they gave a big extension to in the summer. Cam Newton led an amazing comeback. We offer you that and more in this week’s musings.
Make some noisy for Boise ----
gave us one helluva game Friday night and the difference turned out to be a kicker. Boise State senior Kyle Bratzman missed a 26-yard field goal that would have won the game in regulation and then added a 29-yard miss in overtime to end Boise State’s dream of a BCS championship game. Not only that, but the idiotic system we have with conferences tied in to specific games means Boise State will end up in a lousy game despite its terrific season.
Speaking of Bowl stupidity ----
How dumb do you have to be to end up with a situation like this: the SEC and Big Ten will have three head-to-head bowl matchups going on at exactly the same time on January 1. The Outback, Capital One and Gator Bowls will all be underway by 1:30. That’s just insane. You are telling fans of the two most popular conferences they can only watch one of the three. Strange.
Cam-mendous performance ----
I’ll admit it. I thought
was as done as an overcooked Thanksgiving turkey when the Tigers fell behind
24-0 Friday afternoon. But somehow
rallied his team as he had against
and turned potential disaster into cause for celebration. Is there any question that Newton has won the Heisman Trophy? Barring a new “Cam-Scam” revelation in the week to come the race for the Heisman is now a race for second place.
SEC officials relieved ----
Heading into the weekend the Southeastern Conference still had vacancies in terms of eligible teams for its bowl contracts. The league was either one team shy or two, depending on whether or not the league gets two BCS slots (it will).
took care of one slot with a 24-14 win over
and then Georgia became bowl eligible with win over
. Look for those three teams to end up in bowl games in Nashville, Memphis and Birmingham with Kentucky doing everything humanly possible to avoid a fourth trip to the Music City Bowl in Nashville in the last five years.
Who makes sense for Vandy? ----
Amusing but under prepared
is out after one season and less than a year as the head football coach at
. Caldwell took over for Bobby Johnson in July and had the “interim” removed from his title in September. Vandy might want to call
offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen or his former boss
, though it’s hard to see Leach and Vandy as a good fit. They have no shot at
Strong finish in
Louisville coach Charlie Strong got his team bowl eligible Friday with a 40-13 drubbing of
. It’s a very solid start for Strong at Louisville considering the low level of talent he inherited. Louisville is not guaranteed a slot in any game, but look for Cardinals' officials to lobby hard for the Big East slot in the Beef-O-Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg.
not so nice ----
If you wonder why most college athletic programs lose, money look to the University of Miami for a perfect example why. Four months ago the school gave coach Randy Shannon a four-year extension despite his rather pedestrian 21-17 record over three years. Saturday night, after a 23-20 loss to USF the ‘Canes canned Shannon for his mediocre record. So let me get this right. You gave him a contract extension after averaging seven wins a season and then you fire him for winning just seven games this year?
