Addazio Named Head Coach at Temple
Steve Addazio with Tim Tebow
Posted Dec 23, 2010
The key to any head coaching hire comes down to the fit. Considering his recruiting ties and past success with northern football programs, Steve Addazio was the perfect fit for Temple. Al Golden proved that a coach can be successful at Temple, and Addazio walks into a winning situation because of it.
“This is truly a great day for
is the perfect coach to take the program to the next level,” Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said. “Steve brings a wealth of experience with some of the nation’s best programs. As one of the top recruiters in the country, Steve will be able to bring talented players to Temple, and with his vision and passion for the game, he will be able to lead them to success on the field.”
Addazio announced at his press conference on Thursday that he will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator and be heavily involved in the offense. The type of offense he will run at Temple is still up in the air, but it could be a pro-style offense, which is what he worked with until he came to
Addazio made the move to Florida because of his previous relationship with Meyer. The two were on the same staff in 1999 and 2000 at
when Bob Davie was the head coach.
“I am honored,” Addazio said. “I am humbled to be standing here as the head football coach at Temple University. I will give everything I have to make Philadelphia and the University community proud.”
The hire makes sense because of Addazio’s ties to high schools in the northeast. When the Gators found a player they liked in that region, Addazio served as their ace recruiter to get the player.
Addazio was heavily involved in the recruitment of players like
, who was committed to Temple before he flipped to the Gators.
ESPN named Addazio the 2009 recruiter of the year. After
resigned following the 2009 season, Addazio worked extra to hold Florida’s No. 1 recruiting class together.
“I'm happy for Steve Addazio and his family,” Meyer said. “Steve has been extremely loyal to me and the University of Florida, and I will be forever thankful for his unwavering commitment. His energy and passion have been well documented and he is a tremendous recruiter and motivator. He is well respected by his peers and his players and I wish him nothing but the best.”
The staff Addazio was a part of continues to look more impressive. The Gators won a national championship in 2006 and 2008, with each staff having four assistants that now have head coaching jobs. Addazio is the second assistant to get a head-coaching job this offseason, as
job earlier this month.
“Steve has been a big part of our success the last six years at the University of Florida,” Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said. “Everyone that knows Steve knows what a loyal and passionate coach he is. He cares deeply about the players he coaches, and he was a great motivator in the locker room. He has the ability to relate to players, but still maintains their respect. He was one of our top recruiters and his ties to the Northeast will be a good fit for Temple. More than anything, Coach Addazio is a good man with a good family. We wish him the best of luck.”
Addazio took plenty of heat from fans this past season, but he was always a favorite of the players. He was fiery, whether in practice or on the sideline during a game. His enthusiasm made him the coach in charge of pregame speeches, and the players loved to play for him.
“Steve is a great football coach,”
said. “He’s a great motivator. Players really respond to him. He has a great relationship with his players, and he gets his players to play hard for him. He’s very passionate about what he does, and those are all the things you look for in a coach.”
