It was only a matter of time, but Florida made its hiring of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis official on Monday. Florida head coach Will Muschamp said from the beginning he wanted an offensive coordinator with NFL experience, and he got one who has four Super Bowl rings.

“Charlie was a perfect fit for what I was looking for in an offensive coordinator,” Will Muschamp said. “He has both college and pro experience and has been a play caller in the NFL. He has four Super Bowl rings and his accomplishments and his ability to develop quarterbacks speak for themselves.”

Weis was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots from 2000-2004, including a period where they won three out of four Super Bowls. His fourth Super Bowl victory came as an offensive assistant and special teams coach under Bill Parcells with the New York Giants in 1991.

Weis has 32 years of coaching experience, with 16 coming in the NFL. Weis served as the quarterbacks coached who developed Tom Brady with the Patriots.

Weis comes from the Kansas City Chiefs after serving as their offensive coordinator this season. The Chiefs led the NFL with 164.2 rushing yards per game.

He will serve as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Gators.

“Charlie will remain with the Kansas City Chiefs through the playoffs,” Muschamp continued. “We hope the Chiefs make a run to the Super Bowl – it would be great for the Chiefs and great for the Gators. Everyone involved with the Kansas City organization has been first class about the transition.”

The Gators also hired Frank Verducci as their offensive line coach and running game coordinator. He has 28 years of coaching experience in the NFL and college levels.

Verducci coached at Notre Dame in 2009 after eight straight seasons of coaching in the NFL.

Verducci coached two offensive lines that made history. His offensive line paved the way for Dallas Cowboys and former Florida running back Emmitt Smith to break the all-time NFL rushing record in 2002. Verducci was on the Cincinnati Bengals staff when Corey Dillon set the NFL’s single-game rushing record with 278 yards in 2000.

Before his NFL tenure began, Verducci coached at Iowa from 1989-98. The school’s career, signle-season and single-game rushing records were all broken under Verducci’s tutelage.

“Frank will bring a sense of toughness and a physical style of play from our offensive line,” Muschamp said. “It is important that the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator work closely together and always be on the same page. Charlie and Frank had that together at Notre Dame in 2009 and they will have a cohesive plan for the Gators.”

Muschamp also added George Wynn to the staff as the director of football operations. He comes from Texas where he spent six season as the assistant athletics director for football operations for the Longhorns.

Wynn’s duties with the Longhorns included assisting in scheduling, team ravel, planning player-related activities, aiding in the day-to-day operations of the football program and coordinating the Longhorns’ football camps.

“George and I played college football together and I’ve known him for close to 20 years,” Muschamp said. “George has a unique combination of administrative, compliance and football experience. He will work hand in hand with our various departments to help run the day-to-day operations of the football department and has always had great relationships with the student-athletes.”
