It won’t show up in this year’s 2011 recruiting class rankings, but Florida head coach Will Muschamp was able to land maybe the biggest recruit for the 2011 season on the UF wish list. Florida junior cornerback Janoris Jenkins has decided to stay in school and compete for the Gators in 2011, bypassig the NFL draft. Muschamp has to be ecstatic about that portion of his secondary being locked down.

Janoris Jenkins had an All-American type season in 2011 despite injuring his shoulder in game one. Playing with a torn labrum for most of 13 games, Jenkins was able to outperform the best receivers he faced all season, two of which are entering the draft early.

In one-on-one coverage for most of the three games, he held the trio of South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery, Georgia’s A.J. Green and Alabama’s Julio Jones to an average of 4.7 receptions for 38 yards with one combined touchdown between the three. In their other games, that trio averaged 102.5 yards on 6.3 receptions and combined for 24 touchdowns.

Jenkins had shoulder surgery at the conclusion of the regular season and sources tell Fightin’ Gators that he was heavily contemplating leaving for the NFL. That all changed in the last two weeks after talking to Will Muschamp.

“After careful consideration, I’ve made a decision to return to school for my senior year,” Jenkins said in an announced statement from the University of Florida. “I spent some time with my family and Coach Muschamp and came to the conclusion it was in my best interest to return to school. Coach Muschamp was very supportive throughout the whole process, regardless of my decision, but he wanted to make sure I had all of the facts. I’m looking forward to working towards my degree, completing my rehab and getting back on the field with my teammates.”

In the statement, Muschamp offers up what he thinks on the All-American’s return.

“I’m excited that Janoris has made a decision to come back to school,” Muschamp said. “I would have supported him in whatever decision he made, but I commend him for making a mature decision. It would have been real easy for Janoris to make an emotional choice and leave early, but with our contacts in the NFL, we were able to assist him in understanding his draft status and he made an educated decision that will be beneficial to him in the long term.”

Jenkins has started every game but two since his first year on campus. The last being the Outback Bowl on January 1, where he missed so his shoulder surgery could heal. He has eight interceptions including three in his junior season. He was named to the AP All-SEC team and also returned punts for most of the year despite suffering through the pain of the torn labrum. Sources say that Jenkins will miss the spring while recovering but should be completely healthy by the start of fall drills. He still has until January 15 to declare if he were to change his mind.
