‘Stretch' Jones Gets UF Offer, Will Visit

Jarontay Jones

Some nicknames are given and some earned. Jarontay Jones has earned the nickname ‘Stretch'. Look at his highlight tape and you will see a 6-3, 240-pound menace off the edge that gets to the backfield with ease and an attitude. The stretch comes from his long arms and the ability to run his man down across the field. His relentless play has garnered the attention of many and Florida has offered.

Stone Mountain (GA) Stephenson defensive end Jarontay Jones is starting to really shoot up the charts. Offers are coming in left and right for the speedy pass rusher, two of the latest have come from the state of Florida.

"They are coming very fast," Jones told Scout.com on Friday. "I will always be humble, but it is more than I expected and a real blessing to me. I have 15 offers right now. I got Florida State (Friday) and Florida on Wednesday."

The Gators are in dire need of big time pass rusher help and ‘Stretch' seems to be a perfect fit at this time. Florida defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dan Quinn and company are likely going to make Jones a primary target for 2012.

"Florida is recruiting me as a defensive end…most schools are recruiting me as a defensive end and some schools are recruiting me as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme," Jones said. "I have talked to Coach Quinn, Coach Robinson and Coach Muschamp. They like my explosiveness off the ball and my ability to disengage. They said my explosiveness really stood out to them."

The Gators may have an advantage here. Recent NFL rookie and Gator Great Jermaine Cunningham played at Stephenson and according to Jones is a big reason he followed the Gators.

"Florida was my favorite school growing up," he said. "Jermaine Cunningham had something to do with it. Him being at Stephenson is like I am following in his footsteps and I am trying to break his state record. He had 25 sacks in his senior season. I had 16 this past year so I need to do more next year.

Jones and three of his teammates will be visiting the Gainesville campus this weekend coming and he is anxious to see what Florida has to offer. "I have never been down there, so I want to see what it is like on campus," he said. "Then I have to see what the people, the coaches, and some of the players are like."

Of particular interest is the resume of Quinn. The Ten year NFL coaching veteran brings a level of teaching the ways of the pro game that is likely unmatched in the college ranks. Jones understands the importance of someone in that capacity.

"It makes me feel like I can get my technique up and a coach like that can really figure out my potential.

I want to see how much the school really wants me. I want to see if they want me more than I want them," he said.

Jones has a core 3.0 GPA and is working on making it higher. He will take the SAT on March 2, but it isn't something he will sweat. School is something he takes seriously and plans on finishing early.

"My favorite subject used to be Math, but I am taking Calculus right now and it's killing me," he said with a laugh. "I am taking a lot of early classes so I can graduate early."

‘Stretch' is one of those people that attack everything with a passion. That is why you don't want to be the opposing quarterback when he is lined up on the field.

"My strengths are my lightning speed off the ball and my motor…I never stop," he said. "I can be on the other side of the field and hunt the quarterback down. It shows on my highlight tape." It shows off the tape as well.
