Florida sophomore Patric Young has been playing well for USA Basketball in the Under 19 World Championships in held in Riga, Latvia. Team USA is undefeated at 5-0 thanks in large part to the Gator big man and he had a huge hand in the victory over Lithuania on Tuesday which avenged a loss in exhibition a little over a week ago. Young had two huge plays in overtime to help seal the victory.

After missing two free throws near the end of regulation which could have sealed the victory for USA, Patric Young didn’t shy away from the ball in overtime. With two resounding dunks and concurrent free throws, the Florida star sophomore added six of his 15 points in the game on the two plays alone. He also added seven rebounds and a block.

Making the free throws were big as the USA team won 107-105 in the overtime tilt.

“You have to put them behind you,” Young said about missing the free throws earlier in the contest. “Remember the player for the Buffalo Bills that dropped that touchdown not too long ago and he said he was never going to forget that… you have to move on because (it will) affect you for the rest of the game.

"We went into overtime and there was still an opportunity for me to redeem myself and for us to win the game even though they jumped out on us with a nice six point lead. When I went to the line I said ‘I’m going to trust and have confidence in what I do, what I practice in my craft’ and I went and knocked the free throws down, I went four-for-four.”

USA basketball coach Paul Hewitt loved the way Young rebounded from the missed shots at the end of regulation.

“I thought it said an awful lot about Patric’s toughness and mental toughness. To miss two free throws, it would have been easy for him to be disappointed and drop his head but he continued to play hard and made some big plays in overtime. I think overall our team showed some togetherness there, but in particular I thought Patric Young showed a lot of character how he bounced back from missing those two free throws at the end of regulation,” said Hewitt about Young’s play.”

Young has been a steady force in the paint for the USA team averaging 9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and .8 blocks in just 19.6 minutes per game.

Young has started all five games for a USA team that seems destined for the finals, where they may very well meet up with Lithuania yet again.
