Young with Big Game in USA Loss

Patric Young is staying steady and supplying leade

Sophomore forward Patric Young did his part in a two point loss to Croatia on Wednesday. USA Basketball's Under 19 representative in the FIBA World Championships now stands 5-1 in tournament play. Young has been steady with his play and trying to show his leadership skills as one of the oldest and most seasoned players on the team. He understands the team needs to start fast.

The loss did nothing to hurt USA's seeding for the rest of the tournament. They finished with the number one seed in their bracket. The 87-85 loss however may serve as a wakeup call for a team that seems to like to play games close.

Patric Young realizes that the competition is going to be tough and everyone is going to get up to play the Americans. The Florida forward knows they have to be ready every day and at the top of their game every time the horn sounds.

"You've got to come out ready to play every game," Young said following the 87-85 loss to Croatia. "It doesn't matter who steps on the court, you've got to give it your all.

"We came out to this game and I don't think we were mentally ready, mentally prepared for the game. I think we kind of underestimated Croatia and you could tell by the way we played because we let them stay in the game when we had that feeling that we're going to turn it on later in the game. But when it came around to the fourth quarter they had a lot of confidence. It was hard to get stops against them. We turned our game on in the fourth quarter but it was too late by then."

Young was able to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes of play. He has been one of the most consistent players for the USA squad and is trying to use his experience in NCAA post season where his Gators made it to the NCAA Elite Eight back in March to help his teammates along with this tournament.

"We just have to take it one game at a time," he said. "We have three guys on this team, me, Khyle (Marshall) and Jeremy (Lamb), that made deep runs into the NCAA tournament this year, so hopefully we can rub some of that off on the rest of the team this time and do the same thing here."

USA Basketball will take two days off and await the winner of a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday to advance to the Finals. Recommended Stories
