Bruder, Zunino Named Top Student-Athletes

The Ben Hill Griffin Award, given to the top male and female student-athlete at the University of Florida each year, went to 2011 senior outfielder Kelsey Bruder and current junior baseball catcher Mike Zunino. Both athletes led their respective team to the College World Series, and both teams finished as the national runner-up.

Both players were also named SEC Player of the Year for their sport. Kelsey Bruder is the second softball player to earn the Ben Hill Griffin Award after Stacey Nelson did it in 2009. Mike Zunino is the third baseball player to win the award after David Eckinstein (1997) and Brad Wilkerson (1998).

Bruder graduated in December with a 3.7 GPA as a part of a graduating class that won the most softball games in Florida history. She led the SEC during league games in runs (32), doubles (10), slugging percentage (.883), hits (40), RBIs (36) and home runs (11). She was a part of the Florida teams that set the NCAA record of 70 wins in a season in 2008, won SEC titles in 2008 and 2009 and lost just 33 games in her four-year career.

Zunino was first-team All-SEC catcher and became the second Florida baseball player to win SEC Player of the Year. He led the Gatos in batting average (.371), slugging percentage (.674), on-base percentage (.442), runs scored (75), hits (98), RBIs (67), doubles (23), home runs (19) and total bases (178).

The catcher was also named to the SEC All-Defensive team, was a NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team selection and was twice named SEC Player of the Week last season.

Bruder and Zunino will be honored with the Ben Hill Griffin Award at the Hall of Fame Banquet on April 6, 2012. Recommended Stories
