Florida head coach Billy Donovan didn’t waste time filling the open spot on his coaching staff. The Gators announced Thursday afternoon that Rashon Burno would leave his job as an assistant at Manhattan to join the Florida staff.

“He’s a great worker and a high-character guy,” Billy Donovan said in a statement. “He’s almost at a point now where he has a chance to grow into something special. He probably has some things he’ll need to learn and grow, but he’s got a great upside. And he’s really invested into our program because of the opportunity being given him.”

Rashon Burno was part of the first-year coaching staff under Steve Masiello at Manhattan. The coaching staff helped the Jaspers to a 21-13 record in the 2011-12 season after going 6-25 the year before. It was only the 11th 20-win season in the program’s 106-year history.

Burno played college basketball at DePaul from 1998-2002 and was a three-year captain. He joined his former head coach Pat Kennedy as an assistant at Towson University in 2010-11. Before that, he began his coaching career at Marmion Academy in Chicago from 2007-10. He also served as an economics and physical education teacher in that time.

Burno played his high school career at St. Anthony’s High School, the same school as Florida guard Mike Rosario, in Jersey City under legendary head coach Bob Hurley. Burno helped his team to back-to-back national championship runs in 1996 and 1997.

“This is a golden opportunity for me to come in and learn the business from a future Hall-of-Fame coach,” Burno said. “How many guys can say that? It’s a blessing.”
