Johnson Named SEC Player of the Week

There wasn't much suspense around this one. Florida DH/left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson was dominant on the mound while helping the Gators secure the series win over Tennessee, and his bat was just important to the series. The junior was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday.

Brian Johnson hit .471 (8-17) in four games last week while recording a team-high seven RBI.

His week began on the mound in Tallahassee last Tuesday. Johnson started the game against Florida State and went three innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out four hitters. It wasn't his best start, but Johnson kept his team in the game.

He also went 2-5 at the plate. The big blow came in the ninth inning when Johnson drilled a solo home run to give Florida a three-run lead. It was the first home run and only second earned run allowed by Florida State closer Robert Benincasa.

Johnson carried his hot bat on the road trip to Knoxville. He went 2-4 in the opening game on Friday with an RBI single that started the Florida scoring in a 3-1 win.

On Saturday, Johnson was bumped to the cleanup spot in the lineup and rewarded head coach Kevin O'Sullivan for the decision. He went 3-5 at the plate with a solo home run to lead off the second inning.

His biggest impact came on Sunday. Johnson hit a three-run double in the first inning to give the Gators an early lead before he even stepped on the mound. The junior then tossed six shutout innings while striking out four hitters to help the Gators secure the series win.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Georgia Southern.
