Donovan Named Team USA U18 Head Coach

Florida head coach Billy Donovan was named by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee to serve as head coach at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. It will be held June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiao do Paraiso, Brazil.

Billy Donovan will be the head coach of the team while Gonzaga head coach Mark Few and VCU head coach and former Florida assistant Shaka Smart will serve as assistant coaches.

The training camp will open on June 5 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., with approximately 25-30 players competing for roster spots. Finalists will be selected after the final three or four days of training camp, which will continue through June 12. The final roster will consist of 12 players.

"It's always an honor to be selected to represent your country, and I'm incredibly thankful for this opportunity to be a part of USA Basketball," Donovan said. "I have great respect for Shaka Smart and Mark Few, and I'm looking forward to working alongside them."

Eight teams will compete in the 2012 U18 zone qualifier. The top four finishing teams in the tournament will qualify for next summer's 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship. USA men's teams are 38-2 overall in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship and have won gold in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 while winning silver in 2008 and bronze in 2002.
