Mike Zunino Wins Dick Howser Trophy

OMAHA, Neb.—Mike Zunino will leave Gainesville as one of the most decorated players in Florida history. It didn't look like that when his career started. Zunino hit .267 and went through multiple cold streaks as a freshman at Florida. Those times are long gone. The junior catcher added another award on Friday as he received the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in collegiate baseball.

Zunino's career started in the ninth spot of the order as a freshman. It wasn't an indictment on his ability to hit, but head coach Kevin O'Sullivan knew he was spending most of his time focusing on the pitching staff. The bat didn't go as Zunino planned. He was hitting .221 after 28 games and had only two home runs. He was striking out more than usual and falling into bad habits at the plate... Recommended Stories
