Elam Added to Bednarik Award Watch List

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior defensive back Matt Elam (Palm Beach Gardens) has been added to the Bednarik Award Watch List, announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Wednesday.

Matt Elam is one of four players added to the already compiled list of 65, which also includes Florida junior defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa.).

This season, Elam has been explosive as he holds 39 tackles, the second-most on the Gator defense, including four tackles for loss, one sack, a forced fumble, an interception and two pass breakups.

Elam has also garnered national attention recently as he was named to Midseason All-American teams by CBS, Phil Steele, and Sports Illustrated. He was also the SEC co-Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against LSU.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the nation's top defensive player since 1995. The award honors former Penn standout and former Philadelphia Eagle Chuck Bednarik, who is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Monday, October 29, and the three finalists for the award will be unveiled November 19. The winner of the Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 6. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 1, 2013.
