Once considered the leading candidate to win the starting QB job in 2012 before the emergence of Johnny Manziel, redshirt sophomore Jameill Showers has asked for his release to transfer to any school outside of the SEC. According to sources, that release will be granted.
Sources close to the
Texas A&M
football program indicate that redshirt sophomore quarterback
Jameill Showers
has asked head coach Kevin Sumlin for his release to pursue other playing opportunities. That release will be granted.
The Killeen native spent three years in the Texas A&M program, and due to his strong, accurate arm many observers felt the 6-foot-1 quarterback was poised to take the reigns from first round draft pick
Ryan Tannehill
. Showers was considered the No. 1 QB coming out of 2012 spring practices. However, after a two-week close and heated competition, Sumlin announced that redshirt freshman
Johnny Manziel
would be the team's starting signal caller for the inaugural SEC season.
In back-up duties, Showers looked very sharp and productive, but the writing was on the wall after Manziel led the Aggies to an unprecedented 11-2 season and in the process won the Heisman Trophy Award.
Sources also indicate that the third year player with two years of eligibility remaining, plans to graduate this summer and will be able to transfer and play immediately under NCAA rules. Teams said to be on Showers' short list include
Baylor
,
Texas Tech
,
Arizona State
, and Cal-Berkley.
