Georgia LB Allen-Williams Talks U-M offer
But just over a week ago, Allen-Williams decided to call Big Ten country and catch up with the Michigan coaching staff, and on the call he received great news—an offer to play for the University of Michigan.
"It means a lot," he told GoBlueWolverine. "I was talking to coach (Chris) Singletary, he's a great guy. He asked me if I had any interest in Michigan? I said I did. He actually put me on the phone with defensive coordinator (Greg Mattision). He said the way I play is second to none in my class. They say my aggression and the way I play fast with high intensity, they say they want to be part of their defense. I am definitely excited by the Michigan offer."
While Allen-Williams is rated as the No. 20 DE in the latest Scout.com player rankings, he said Mattison is recruiting him to play linebacker at Michigan.
"He said I can both, because of my versatility," he explained. "You know, as an outside backer I can go after the quarterback on third downs. You know, they're an aggressive defense. So he told me the inside backer, I can go meet the hole and meet the tackle or pulling guard."
Now that Allen-Williams has the Michigan offer, he said he plans on making a visit sometime during the spring or summer. While on his visit, he noted that he want to see how the coaching staff works with the current players.
"I am really just trying to see the style of coaching that they have," he said. "That means a lot. Everyone one can coach, OK. But I want to see more and hear more from the players on how efficient the coaching is. That's one thing, I want to go to a school that has efficient coaching. Because everyone can play the division-1 level. The coaches that coach their players up the most, those are the teams that win. I just want to sit down with coach and see how I am going to used in the defense, see what type of scheme that they run and see if it fits me."
Another major factor in Allen-Williams decision process is academics.
"Definitely, academics is one thing that my mom always preaches to me," he said. "Every division-1 school has great athletics, but what set that school apart from other schools? One of the first things that coach Singletary told me, he said, ‘Everyone is a good football player, but academics sets you apart'. I think the thing that sets (Michigan) apart is the academics."
Being from the Peach state, playing in warmer weather conditions is the norm for Allen-Williams. However, the Michigan fall and winters won't be a factor in his decision process.
"Weather for me is not a big factor, because in the NFL it's cold," he said. "Big Ten football is known for smash mouth, aggressive defenses and that's one thing I really like about Michigan. I actually looked at how they played against South Carolina (in the 2013 Outback Bowl)—even though they lost, it was an aggressive defense. You know, as a defensive player I want to be in at outside linebacker or inside linebacker. I like moving a lot. I like being aggressive myself. I like blitzing, disguising coverage. That's one thing I really like."
Currently, most of Allen-Williams top-five schools mostly hail from the SEC. Although, he said with the recent Michigan offer, the Wolverines are on the rise.
"South Carolina is definitely my leader," he said. "In my top-five right now, it's South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and UCLA. I just started talking to Michigan and after talking to coach Singletary—they're definitely going to move up, they're a great program. He's a great coach."
Allen-Williams said he would like to make a decision around signing day.
