Miami NFTC: Defensive Preview

Chad Thomas

A look at the some of the top offensive prospects expected at the Miami NFTC on Sunday...

Some of Florida's finest will be at Barry University Sunday to compete at the Miami Nike Football Training Camp. Many of the Scout 300 will be in attendance competing trying to earn an invite to The Opening and increase their ranking.

Scout will be in attendance and here is a preview who we expect to see Sunday:

Defensive Line

There is plenty of talented defensive linemen traveling to Barry University Sunday. This will be a very strong position.

Leading the way will be Chad Thomas, a Scout 100 defensive end out of Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington and he has over a dozen offers. He is off to a great start in 2013 and he really shined at another camp earlier this year. He gets off the ball well, he has long arms, and he has really come on over the past six months.

Other top defensive ends to keep an eye on are Michael Smith out of Miami (Fla.) Northwestern, Sharief Rhaheed out of Fort Pierce (Fla.) Fort Pierce Central, and Tony Baxter out of Hialeah (Fla.).

Smith is a four-star rush end who could also play outside linebacker and Rhaheed is similar to Smith athletically. Both have big-time offers. Baxter is one Scout has had their eye on for years and he has been up and down due to off-the-field issues. If he turns that corner, watch out.

Two top 2016 prospects will be town too. Nick Bosa is the younger brother of 2013 Ohio State signee and he has already been offered by the Buckeyes. He plays at St. Thomas Aquinas. Rahshaun Smith is a 6-foot-3, 220 pound freshman out of Calvart Hall in Maryland and he has already been offered by Boston College, Maryland, Penn State, and many others.

Moving to the inside, five-star defensive tackle Khairi Clark out of Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna is the headliner. This young man is strong, he is quick off the ball, and he gets consistent penetration into the backfield. He is a national target.

Anthony Moten is another defensive lineman out of St. Thomas Aquinas and he is one who has seen his stock explode over the past few months. He is a four-star on Scout with over 20 offers. Edgar Cerenord is a true defensive tackle out of American Heritage in Plantation, Fla. and he has good feet, he shoots gaps with quickness, and he is a sleeper to watch this weekend.

It is not a great year for linebackers in Florida when talking depth at the top, but at least two good ones will be in action Sunday. Frank Newman is a linebacker who could play inside or outside on the next level and after attending Southridge in 2012, he is now at Homestead. He did not play last season, but he made a name for himself early in his high school career. He has good speed and he is a strong linebacker.

Richard Yeargin transferred to University School from Chaminade-Madonna and his recruitment has really picked up. He could be a stand up end or outside linebacker on the next level. He has good length and he is a top 40 prospect in the Sunshine State.

Defensive Back

Has an cornerback in Florida been hotter that Chris Lammons over the past six weeks or so? He has been offered by Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and Ohio State among others. The Plantation (Fla.) corner is a high three-star corner on Scout.

Other top corners competing Sunday are Al Harris, Deatrick Nichols, and Nigel Patten. Harris is a smooth corner who knows the game, Nichols can play physical, and Patten is the smallest of the three and he is the quickest. All are from Florida and in the 2014 class.

A couple of safety prospects that could shine are Quincy Wilson and Shawn Burgess. Wilson is a well known athlete out of University School and he has offers from many national programs. Burgess is a 6-foot-2, 190 pound athlete out of Monarch (Fla.) in the 2015 class that Scout has their eye on. He is a versatile athlete who could breakout this weekend and become a known name.

A couple other 2015 prospects at this position that Scout feels will be among the best in Florida are Tarvarus McFadden out of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage and Kendall McFadden out of Hollywood (Fla.) McArthur. Both have offers and both with be national recruits in their class. Both have good size, both can run, and both make plays.
