Gators earn No. 3 seed in South Region Staff
Posted Mar 17, 2013

The Gators know their path through the NCAA Tournament. Florida earned a No. 3 seed and will open its tournament run on Friday in Austin against Northwestern State. There are plenty of big name programs that the Gators could face through the rest of the bracket.

Florida was placed in the South Region by the NCAA committee and will open the tournament on Friday at a time to be announced later. The games in Austin, Texas will be played in the Frank Erwin Center.

The Gators open the tournament against Northwestern State, who went 23-8 during the season and clinched the Southland Conference Tournament on Saturday with a 68-66 win over Stephen F. Austin.

The Demons played three Southeastern Conference teams during the season, all on the road. Northwestern State lost 102-95 at LSU, lost 78-65 at Texas A&M and lost 79-61 at Texas A&M.

The winner of Florida’s matchup with Northwestern State will face off with the winner of No. 6 seed UCLA and No. 11 seed Minnesota.

UCLA is hurt by an injury to guard Jordan Adams, the team’s leading scorer, that will keep him out of the tournament. Minnesota heads into the tournament after losing 11 of its last 16 games.

If the high seeds advance, Florida would have a rematch of sorts with Georgetown with a berth to the Elite Eight on the line. The two teams first met in the season-opener aboard the USS Bataan in Jacksonville, Fla. Florida led 27-23 at halftime.
