It was a season to forget for both Tim Tebow and the New York Jets. Now it seems as if their unhappy marriage will be over sooner rather than later.

Tim Tebow’s time in the Big Apple is nearly striking midnight. Dan Graziano of reported this week that Tebow is as good as gone and is expected to be released in the coming weeks. The Jets are still clinging to the slim likelihood that they could swing a trade with a team in desperate need of a quarterback and obtain a late round draft choice in exchange for the former Heisman Trophy winner.

In the wake of Mark Sanchez’s struggles this past season, Gang Green passed over Tebow for the starting job with Rex Ryan giving the starting nod to third-stringer Greg McElroy.

This begs the question, why did the front office bring Tebow to New York in the first place?

The finger pointing game started this offseason when former manager Mike Tannebaum took the fall for the Tebow trade, admitting that he was the driving force behind the blockbuster deal. The Tebow tale doesn’t appear to have a storybook ending with the Green and White and it looks like a change of scenery is in order for No. 15.

The only problem is that the Jets aren’t the only team doubting Tebow’s value as a quality NFL starting quarterback. With his future in the league uncertain, Tebow may have to shift his playing position to tight end, running back or settle for a role as a gadget quarterback.

What lies ahead for Tebow is anyone’s guess, but after a rollercoaster first season in New York, it’s unlikely he’ll be onboard for another go-round with the Green and White holding a clipboard and playing just a handful of snaps per game.

As scouts evaluate the 2013 quarterback draft class, the Jets would be smart to select a potential replacement for Sanchez and once and for all set Tebow free.
