As the New York Jets prepare for training camp in July, the 2013 season could be a make or break year for head coach Rex Ryan.

Any way you slice it, Rex Ryan’s coaching future in the Big Apple is far from certain. Consecutive AFC title appearances in 2009 and 2010 may not seem like a distant memory, but after the shortfalls of the past two seasons, Gang Green’s once celebrated coach has caught the ire of the Jets’ fan base.

With doubt and cynicism pervading Jets' nation, Ryan has always adopted a glass half full philosophy even during the toughest of times. As veteran free agents walked out the doors at Florham Park this offseason, there’s no secret that the Jets are a rebuilding team looking to return to respectability.

The question that looms large in the minds of many fans is whether Ryan will be around when Gang Green eventually turns things around?

The Jets have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, ranging from stories about their former back-up quarterback Tim Tebow, to the humiliating ‘butt fumble’ play which ironically epitomized Mark Sanchez’s struggles last season.

But to pin the team’s struggles on just one player is not only foolish, but inaccurate. The Jets' problems run deeper than Sanchez’s miscues. The coaching staff, the front office and ownership each deserve their share of the blame for what transpired the past two seasons. With a newly hired offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, general manager and scouting team, Ryan is one of the few holdovers from last season.

The Jets have still have yet to name their starting quarterback as rookie Geno Smith will Duke it out with Sanchez during training camp this summer. Ryan will be forced to pick the player he thinks will lead Gang Green back into playoff contention and help salvage his coaching career.

As the position battles play out during camp, the Jets' depth chart will start to take shape and form what could be Ryan’s last stand in New York.
