Matt Jones earned the Florida starting running back job with a strong spring, but it seemed likely he would win it after his strong close to the 2012 season when he was a freshman. He finished third on the team with 275 rushing yards and three touchdowns, seeing playing time in 12 games.
The breakout game for Jones came against Florida State. Mike Gillislee got hurt late in the game with the Gators holding a lead, and Jones stepped in to run the clock out, adding a 32-yard touchdown run to clinch the game. He ended the game with eight carries for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Overall, 11 Southeastern Conference running backs were selected for the watch list.
The semifinalists for the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be named on November 14, and the finalists will be announced on November 25. The winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12.
