When the Gators visit the bayou this weekend for their bi-annual trip to play LSU in Tiger Stadium, they’ll bring along their ferocious defense. It’s a defense that leads the Southeastern Conference in Rushing Defense, Passing Defense, Total Defense and Scoring Defense. CBS color analyst Gary Danielson will be calling the game Saturday and says a huge key will be how the officials call it.

Florida is quickly building a reputation as the premier place for defensive backs to learn their skills. A breeding ground for NFL secondary players, the Gators boast maybe the best secondary in all of college football in 2013.

LSU provides some dynamite talent on offense as well with an experienced quarterback that is playing among the nation’s best himself and a pair of receivers that are the best combo in the SEC.

All of that adds up to what might be terrific play when LSU has the ball, and that play coming from both sides of the line of scrimmage. It also means it might be a tough one to call for the officials, and Danielson puts them on the spot for this contest.

“A key to this football game will be the officials and whether they allow the man-to-man defensive backs for Florida to be physical with the LSU receivers,” Danielson said in a promo sent out for the game. “Will they allow Vernon Hargreaves III and Loucheiz Purifoy to put their hands on the receivers and re-route Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry? That aspect is important in this game because if the officials start calling early ticky-tack penalties, it will take Florida out of that preferred defensive style.”

Florida absolutely has their hands full with the SEC’s third rated passing offense and fourth best offense overall. They will bring their best ad a unit that Danielson believes is the best they have seen so far. But, he also says LSU probably feels like they are ready for it.

“LSU is going to face a very athletic pass rush,” Danielson said. “The Tigers were not able to put pressure on Aaron Murray and they paid dearly at the end of that game when the Georgia defense finally started to put some pressure on Zach Mettenberger. This Florida defensive line is superior to Georgia’s and that’s going to be an important part of this game. But sometimes as a quarterback you get the feeling that ‘We’re better than them. We have better play-calling then them. We have better receivers. They are not going to stop us.’ That feeling does permeate the huddle and I’m sure Mettenberger feels that way.”

One other key in the game will be Florida’s starting quarterback. It will be just the third start for junior Tyler Murphy , but Danielson said Murphy is an inspiration and a guy that is taking on more than most thought he would in his position.

“Tyler Murphy is a tremendous example to all of college football including coaches, parents and players,” the CBS voice said. “Eventually you will get your shot. It doesn’t always happen on your time table, but everybody eventually gets that opportunity to prove themselves.

“The major question is will you be ready when your opportunity opens? Murphy is a great example of a player who was ready. He studied his playbook. He kept himself in shape. And when he got his chance it didn’t matter that his coaches didn’t believe he was a starting quarterback. He believed it and has earned the position. Murphy is now actually getting more offensive plays and designs than Jeff Driskel was.”
