2016 Spotlight: Familiar Name, Familiar Game
Andrew Boselli

Let’s see, Boselli… yeah we know the name. Offensive lineman, way ahead of the game, mature beyond his years, two way player… what? Not that Boselli, but his son. Andrew Boselli is a sophomore just finishing his first season of varsity for Jacksonville (Fla.) Providence High School and got his first college scholarship offer before he played varsity ball. He is the son of Tony Boselli ex-NFL star.

I watched Andrew Boselli in person this year for the second time, the first was much earlier in the season. Both times, I came away impressed, but it is easy to see how he has grown in a couple f months as far as his play on the field.

The sophomore plays left guard and defensive tackle for Providence and rarely, if ever, comes off the field. Something that is pretty tough for a kid his age.

“It’s draining, but you have to give it all you got and lay it on the line for your team,” he said shortly after a tough loss to Ocala (Fla.) Trinity Catholic that eliminated his team from the playoffs.

Boselli is teammates with another big time lineman in David Sharpe, a senior who will be making his public commitment to a college on Thursday. The young lineman says he has learned a lot form older guys like Sharpe and his coaches.

“I definitely learned a lot from great coaching and the older guys around me,” he said. “I learn a lot from guys like David and the experience is helping me get better each game.”

Andrew’s father is former USC Trojan and Jacksonville Jaguar Tony Boselli. One of the best to ever play offensive tackle in college or pro football, the elder Boselli says his son is on the right track.

“He’s a very bright football player,” Tony Boselli said. “He can make all the calls and really help anyone with whatever position they play. Football smarts he gets it. He’s a sophomore and a young guy, just 16 years old and has a lot of growing to do. For his first year starting, I thought he did very well. He’s a really good run blocker and needs to get better at pass blocking, for most young guys that is the hardest thing to do. He needs to get in the weight room and get a good offseason and he has a chance to be a good player.”

The fact that he plays both was as just a tenth grader is something else. In the trenches, getting pounded, can take a toll on a young man, but fights through it to be a very good two-way player.

“He’s one of our guys where at Providence some of our guys have to play every snap, his coach and father said. “For a sophomore to do that, it isn’t easy. We ask a lot of him and he responds and I think it will make him a better player.”

Boselli earned a college scholarship offer to play football before he ever played varsity football. The Miami Hurricane coaches came in this past spring, watched him practice and were convinced.

“I am hearing from Alabama, Georgia, and already have an offer from Miami,” Andrew Boselli said before expounding on the offer. “It is super exciting and has pushed me to work harder and get better every day. “

With two more years of high school football to go, he has some goals for his junior year.

“My goals next year are to work hard, get better, be one of the best linemen in the city and help my team go as far as we can in the playoffs,” he said.
