COLUMBIA, S.C. (South Carolina SID) The fifth-ranked Gamecocks have not allowed a run in 33 straight innings, effectively shutting out their last three opponents as South Carolina defeated Eastern Kentucky 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are now 5-0 on the year while the Colonels fall to 1-4.

Joey Pankake went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kyle Martin hit a solo homer and extended his hitting streak to five games. Max Schrock homered as well. Both Martin and Schrock have two homers on the year.

Junior left-hander Jordan Montgomery improved to 2-0 on the year. Montgomery hurled seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four batters. He has not allowed a run in 34.0 consecutive innings pitched going back to last year. Junior right-hander Cody Mincey added a scoreless inning of relief tallying two strikeouts. Joel Seddon closed it out for the Gamecocks with a perfect inning of relief striking out two batters.

The Gamecocks went ahead 1-0 in bottom of the second as Martin sent a 1-0 pitch soaring over the right field fall for his second home run in as many games. Schrock added to the Gamecock lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Pankake sparked a two-run inning for South Carolina in the bottom of the sixth as he crushed a ball to the gap in right-center for a leadoff double. With Pankake on third base, a pitch hit Grayson Greiner to give the Gamecocks runners on the corners. The Eastern Kentucky third baseman attempted to throw Pankake out at home on a sharp hit ball off the bat of Connor Bright but Pankake safely scored and gave the Gamecocks a 3-0 advantage. Designated hitter Brison Celek then singled up the middle and drove in Greiner for the second run of the inning.

The series continues Saturday at Carolina Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Live video broadcast is available at GamecocksOnline.com. The game can also be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network from IMG College including flagship station 107.5 FM, "The Game."
