Gators are number one overall seed in NCAA's

Donovan has his winningest regular season team

The number one Florida Gators will tip off the NCAA tournament as the overall top seed in the annual right of passage for college basketball. Florida will play in Orlando in the first two games of the tournament and will match up in round one against the winner of a play-in game.

Billy Donovan and his Florida Gators are the winningest team in school history in terms of wins before the SEC tournament. The Gators bring a 31-2 record into the big tournament after finishing 18-0 in the SEC during the regular season and winning the conference tournament going 3-0 this weekend.

Florida is the number one seed in South Region of the tournament and will start play on Thursday. Florida will find out their opponent after St. Mary's (16-16) and Albany (18-14) play off on Wednesday.

If the Gators win round one, they will play against the winner of the #8-#9 game , Colorado (23-11) vs. Pittsburgh (25-9).

Florida could face Kansas 24-9) in the regional final as the Jayhawks are the #2 seed in the South Regional. They will face off against Eastern Kentucky (24-9). Florida already has a 67-61 win over Kansas, that game was played in Gainesville.

The third seed in the South is another major basketball power. Syracuse (27-5) spent a good deal of last month as the top team in the country and has the talent to win it all. The Orangemen will face off against Western Michigan (23-9).

A team Florida has faced a few times in the tournament is the 4th seed in the South. UCLA (26-8) will play Tulsa (21-12) who is the #13 seed in the South.

The Gators could match up in the Sweet 16 against familiar VCU (26-8) who as the 5-seed will play #12 seed Stephen F Austin (31-2). VCU is of course coached by former Gator assistant Shaka Smart.

Ohio State (25-9) is the 6-seed in the South and will play in-state Dayton (23-10). The Buckeyes have been dodging the Flyers during the season and the tournament selection committee had a little fun with that one.

The New Mexico Lobos (27-6) are the #7 team in the South Region and will square off against #10 Stanford (21-12).

That completes the South bracket. Here is a look at the other top two seeds in the other brackets.

The Western bracket is highlighted by #1 seed Arizona (30-4). They get the right to start off against 16-seed Weber State (19-11). The #2 seed in the West is Wisconsin (26-7) and the Badgers will take on #15 seed American (20-12). Wisconsin is one of the two teams that have beaten Florida this year and the Gators would only meet them in the tournament semi-finals if both teams won their regions of the bracket.

Wichita State (34-0) with their unbeaten season gets to play game one against play-in contestants Cal Poly (13-19) or Texas Southern (19-14).

Beyond that, the selection committee made sure they would meet up with some very talented teams in the Midwest Bracket. SEC second place finisher Kentucky (24-10) with all of their future NBA stars and as an 8-seed would be a possibility in game two. Th Big Ten Champs Michigan (25-8) are the 2-seed in the Midwest. Perennial power Duke (26-8) is the 3-seed in the Midwest. Finally, defending national champion Louisville (29-5) is the 4-seed in that particular region of the bracket.

Finally the East bracket is headlined by 1-seed Virginia (28-6) who won the ACC regular season and the ACC Tournament this past weekend. The Cavaliers will tip off against Coastal Carolina (21-12). The 2-seed in the East is Villanova (28-4)who will square off against 15-seed Milwaukee (21-13) in their first games.
