Young earns big man award

Florida center Patric Young added a prestigious award to an already special season on Thursday. The senior was named the 2014 NABC Pete Newell Big Man of the Year, given to the top power forward or center in the country each season.

Patric Young heads into the Final Four with 1,288 points and 844 rebounds in his career while shooting 58 percent from the field.

He was also named 2014 SEC Defensive player of the Year, recognized by the conference's coaches for his outstanding defense of the pick-and-roll. Florida coach Billy Donovan said last month that Young is the best big man pick-and-roll defender that he has ever coached.

Young has started all but two games this season, and he came off the bench in those two since he didn't practice before the game because of knee tendinitis. This season, Young is averaging 10.8 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 54 percent.

The NABC Pete Newell Big Man of the Year award has a long list of well known winners, including Kentucky's Anthony Davis (2012), Georgetown's Greg Monroe (2010), Oklahoma's Blake Griffin (2009) and Ohio State's Greg Oden.

Young has also been selected as the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year the past three season, the first person in league history to win the award three times.
