Two Gators on Bronko Nagurski watch list

Florida defensive end Dante Fowler, Jr. and cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III were named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation’s top defensive player.

The two players were also named to the Bednarik Award watch list earlier this week.

Dante Fowler has played in 25 games during his first two years in Gainesville with 13 starts. He has totaled 80 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks. Last year, he led the Gators with 10.5 tackles for a loss and was second on the team with 3.5 sacks.

The coaches challenged him to have a consistent spring and Fowler delivered. He could be setting up for a breakout season that features him as a game-changing pass rusher every game. That wasn’t always the case last year.

Vernon Hargreaves played in every game during his freshman season last year, earning 10 stats. He intercepted three passes, all coming in the first four games of the season before teams started to throw away from him. He led the Florida team with 11 pass breakups and added 26 tackles.
