The Head Ball Coach didn't have much going for him and his South Carolina team in the passing game. However, the Gamecocks effectively ran the ball on first down, which helped the struggling Carolina offense, while pressuring the Gators defense to cover the entire field on the following downs. Spurrier, who was mixing things up on first down before the intermission, adjusted and helped his Gamecocks emerge with a 30-22 victory.

South Carolina was successful when they ran the ball on first down. The Gamecocks picked up 78 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns running on first. They had 36 carries for 120 yards in the entire game. Tailback Mike Davis ripped off the Gamecocks biggest ground gain of the game with a 24 yard first down run in the second quarter.
