In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.
The Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County offers that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.
This Saturday, the Orange and Blue Game will be the talk of the town in Gainesville. Families and children will gather in The Swamp to watch their beloved Gators in action in their final action of the spring. Parents will be watching their sons fulfilling their dreams on Florida Field. Children will envision one day running out of that tunnel. Many will develop a newfound passion for the sport and the Gators.
When the fans come pouring out of that stadium on Saturday with smiles on their faces, many children will be inspired to get out and participate in their hometown athletics. The Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County is that local source for recreation and football. They started the Alachua County Football League when there was no other outlet for the local children to play football recreationally, and they are now so large that they're outgrowing their facilities.
This Saturday, when the fans are celebrating their football team and tailgating along University Avenue, the coaches of the ACFL will be soliciting donations for renovations to their football field. The program needs new bleachers and lights so they can hold games at night. They'll be carrying around helmets to put donations in, and all proceeds will go towards their football program which many former and current Gators have been the product of.
Former Gators Doug Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals; Willie Jackson, now retired after an 11 year career in the NFL; and Terry Jackson of the San Francisco 49ers all started off their football careers as youngsters in the Alachua County Football League.
The Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County needs your help. This is your chance to help the future Gators. These kids deserve a field to play on with lights and bleachers. Please give what you can if you see these coaches out there all day Saturday collecting for their boys to play football.
For those that can't be in Gainesville this weekend, you can quickly and easily donate by credit card at 352-372-5342. Any amount is appreciated. Make sure you state that you're donating for the athletics department, so that the funds go specifically for the renovations. This is a great cause, and these kids need your help. Go Gators!
