On Thursday night, FightinGators.com reported that Donovan had agreed to take the Orlando Magic job only if his former assistant and now head coach of Virginia Commonwealth Anthony Grant agreed to become the Gators new head coach.
Before Donovan agreed to terms with the Magic, he was confident that Grant would take the position if athletic director Jeremy Foley offered it to him. Donovan was concerned with his commitment to both the current Florida players and the incoming recruits.
After a long weekend of back-and-forth discussions between Florida and Grant, the two appear to be no closer to an agreement than when discussions originally began. With Grant's uncertainty, Donovan is now reconsidering his jump to the Magic.
According to Katz, the ball is now in Orlando's court as they hold the key to Donovan's future. The team can allow Donovan to get out of the five-year $27.5 million contract he inked on Friday and return to Florida, or they can hold him to the new deal. A final decision is expected on Monday.
