Former Gator soccer stay Abby Wambach suffered as broken leg on Wednesday and will not be part of the US team for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing. Wambach collided with another player during a game against Brazil and broke both her Tibia and Fibula.
While the loss is devastating for the former Gator great it is also a crushing blow for the Gold Medal hopes of the United States. Wambach has been the team’s leading scorer in each of the last three major competitions and has scored 99 goals in 127 games for the US squad. She is on the verge of becoming just the ninth player in the world and fifth American to reach the 100 goal mark.
Team USA is 21-0-1 this season and once again it’s the 28-year-old Wambach leading the team with 13 goals and 10 assists.
Better News for Gator Men
Wednesday was a positive day for a couple of other former Gators as far as international play is concerned.
Matt LaPorta
was named to play on the US Olympic Baseball Team. The selection is obviously a big honor for LaPorta, but it also adds to a remarkable week for the slugger who was traded from Milwaukee’s organization to Cleveland in the
C.C. Sabathia
deal.
Another Gator will get a little taste of the Olympics.
Al Horford
was named to the US Select Team that will practice against the US Olympic Team in Las Vegas next week. Horford’s presence on the nine-man squad should give him a bit of a leg up when it comes to consideration for the US Team in the 2010 World Championships or 2012 Olympics.
