Florida Basketball player Alex Tyus has changed his mind and Coach Billy Donovan has agreed to let him remain with the Florida team for the upcoming season.
Alex Tyus
stunned many a couple of weeks back when he announced his intention to leave and FightinGators.com was able to report much of his desire to move on revolved around his view of himself as a more perimeter oriented player. His change of heart and
Florida
’s agreeing to allow him to stay may well be an indication that Tyus will embrace his role as the power forward for the Gators next season.
Donovan was positive about Tyus’ decision according to a release from the Gator Athletic Association.
“It’s great to know that his heart is here at the University of Florida. I know he will work hard, and I look forward to helping him continue to grow and develop as a person and as a player.”
Tyus was the Gators second leading scorer last season. He averaged 12.5 points a game and was Florida’s leading rebounder at 6.2. However those averages were lower (11.8/5.5) in SEC play. He spent this season as Florida’s primary center, but is expected to move to the “4” spot with the eligibility of
Vernon Macklin
and the return of
Kenny Kadji
and
Eloy Vargas
.
That same news release included Tyus’ statement on his decision.
“The University of Florida is where I want to be. I truly feel this is the best place for me to continue to grow and improve and I look forward to this upcoming season.”
It will probably be late May or early June before Florida knows whether
Nick Calathes
will return to the team. The multi-talented guard is evaluating his professional opportunities, but has until June 15 to remove his name from the NBA draft. Regardless of Calathes’ decision and Tyus’ return the Gators are expected to add a guard to next year’s roster.
