Gators on Top in First Edition of BCS

Florida dropped out of the top position in the AP poll this week after their close call with Arkansas, but they're on top of the standings that count. Florida is first in the initial edition of the BCS numbers for 2009, ahead of fellow SEC foe Alabama. Texas is in the third spot, with Boise State and Cincinnati rounding out the top five.
Florida
decisively held the top spot in the coaches and Harris polls, which is why they were able to hold off
Alabama
. The Gators number is .9886, while Alabama's is .9526. Florida and Alabama are also one and two in the computer rankings.
One thing that jumps out from these standings is that humans like
Texas
a lot more than the computers do. The Longhorns sit at No. 6 in the computers, behind
Iowa
,
Cincinnati
and
Boise State
. Conversely, humans don't like Iowa near as much as the machines. The Hawkeyes are No. 7 and 8 in the latest polls.
The fact a Boise team that has played only one team of consequence and also has a game with Cal-Davis on their resume is ahead of Mack Brown's team post Oklahoma game is fairly stunning. As long as
Oregon
, who sits at No. 11 in the BCS standings, keeps winning it appears Boise State will be lurking near the top.
Florida won't be getting a lot of help from the back half of its schedule, driving home just how essential it is for them to remain undefeated until the SEC Championship game if they want another crack at the BCS title. Right now the only scheduled opponent to make the BCS Top 25 is
South Carolina
at No. 24.
