Burton Football Diary - 11/9/09
We played Manatee two weeks ago and we won the district championship for the third straight year. It was a very hot and humid night for the last weekend in October and the stadium was packed. Venice brought 4,000 fans, and even Dick Vitale was there and spoke about the game on the Mike & Mike Show on ESPN.
We are the No. 1 team in the area and No. 3 in the State in 5A, behind St. Thomas Aquinas and Lakeland. Trey was a complete monster that night and he made so many outstanding plays because he refused to let Manatee beat us. If you ask anyone around here what their favorite play was, most fans will talk about the wild play with Trey rolling out of the pocket with defenders chasing him and rushing down the sideline but instead of running out of bounds like quarterbacks should do, he hurdle a guy just to get a few more yards.
My favorite play was when we were faced with 4th-and-10, and the ball was snapped and a linebacker blitzed and Trey was under all kinds of pressure and instead of letting the play break down, Trey put some heat on the ball and threaded it between three defenders into the hands of Josh Boyle for a first down and then some.
I just asked Trey what his favorite play was that night, and he said when he took a knee to run out the clock for the 43-29 win, he is a funny guy.
Beckett Wales our big tight end was outstanding with two receiving touchdowns and Clay ended up playing both ways a lot that night to block at tight end. Trey ended up with 253 yards passing and three touchdowns and 157 yards rushing with two touchdowns for 410 yards total offense.
Manatee's head coach said some really nice things about Trey, but I certainly don't want to see them again in the second round of the playoffs because they did some things in the game that were very unnecessary and ugly. Clay and Brandon Wilkinson were getting held all night so they have already made some adjustments to not let that happen again. Clay was tenacious in the fourth quarter and just wore Brion Carnes and his offense out with a sack, tipped pass and a caused fumble. I was impressed by Ace Sanders and Mike Blakely from Manatee, they have both improved since last year.
This past Friday we played a private school out of Hollywood Hills named Wood Haven Prep. I believe their record so far this year was 5-1 and I can see why. They had a lot of speed and a few athletes, and with only two coaches they were tougher than they looked. The final score was 46-6 but our starters only played the first half. Trey broke a school record by passing for 308 yards with three touchdowns. It is such a great feeling to win nine straight games.
At this point, Trey has 18 touchdowns passing with 1,900 yards and 22 touchdowns rushing for 900 yards. We have another bye week this week because we have had a hard time getting anyone to play us this year. The coaches do not like having this many weeks off, but at this point in the season I am glad the boys get to rest. Next Friday, November 20, we will play the winner of St. Pete High vs. Pinellas Park at home for the first week of the playoffs. Coach Peacock said we could have as many as three or four home playoff games this year. I would like to see us get past the second round of the playoffs, and then the fun really begins.
This morning in Moms in Touch we prayed Colossians 3:2 over the boys "Set your affection on things above, and not on things on the earth."
I'm not going to make Rice Krispie treats this week since we won't have a team meal. Trey enjoyed attending the Vanderbilt game last weekend in The Swamp and Clay flew up to the Clemson vs. FSU game. This weekend we will watch the Gators take on South Carolina, I'm so grateful Trey will play for Coach Meyer the New Ball Coach. Go Gators.
