Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced today that Sharrif Floyd a senior defensive lineman from George Washington High School (Philadelphia, PA) was selected as the Club’s 2009 National High School Player of the Year.
Perhaps the most physically dominant lineman of this class, Floyd was almost unstoppable for George Washington High School. A consensus top 10 player in the nation, the 6’3 and 305 pound Floyd has the speed to be an effective defensive end but has the size and push to be an elite defensive tackle. He rose to national prominence last January at the U.S. Army National Combine where his quick feet and powerful legs saw him run rampant over the offensive lineman. Just to get to San Antonio, Floyd partnered with his high school guidance counselor to bake brownies and cookies and raise the necessary funds to cover his expenses to the combine. Offers from nearly every major program from
Florida
and
Ohio State
to
USC
would follow his impressive showing.
In April, he was one of 400 national players nominated for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The next month was busy for the player as he was named MVP of the elite and prestigious TEST Sports Clubs Premier Showcase, which featured over 300 of the northeast’s top blue-chip recruits. Also in May, Floyd won the “Mini-Maxwell” award at Football University in Philadelphia. In January, he was named a finalist for the Anthony Munoz Award, given to the nation’s top lineman. Then during the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Floyd ended all the speculation by committing to the University of Florida during a nationally televised announcement at halftime of the game. Floyd finished the game as the East team’s most prolific defensive player, registering two sacks.
The formal presentation of this award will be March 5, 2010 during the Maxwell Football Club National Awards Dinner which will be hosted by Harrah’s Atlantic City Resort.
