The Florida Gators didn't have to go far to find the point guard they needed in the 2010 class, they just had to speed up time a little bit. Class of 2011 point guard Scottie Wilbekin has rushed through his junior and senior years in the classroom and decided to commit to a scholarship offer from the Florida Gators and will sign with the 2010 class.
Scottie Wilbekin
joins forwards
Casey Prather
,
Patric Young
,
Will Yeguette
, and
Cody Larson
in the 2010 class and brings much needed help in the backcourt for
Florida
in the 2010 season.
According to the press release by The Rock School in Gainesville, “Scottie Wilbekin's potential signing made national news last month when he reclassified to the 2010 class, and decided to graduate early and forgo his senior year of high school to play for Florida next year. He has completed all of his high school requirements and is expected to graduate with his peers at The Rock School's graduation ceremony...All of his paperwork has been submitted to the NCAA eligibility center. He is awaiting his SAT score, which is expected to return sometime around May 20.
A ceremony will be held for the signing of the scholarship papers on Tuesday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony and a press conference following will be held at The Rock School.
Our sources tell us that Wilbekin brings a very high basketball I.Q. to the Gator program, he's a good shooter, and under-rated athletically. Wilbekin has been around the Gator program for years going to camps, so the basketball staff knows exactly what they are getting.
Wilbekin will join junior
Erving Walker
and sophomore
Kenny Boynton
as the only guards eligible for the 2010-2011 season with the status of
Nimrod Tishman
tenuous at best. Junior transfer guard
Mike Rosario
from
Rutgers
is on the roster, but has to sit out the first year of his transfer. Wilbekin is expected to get immediate playing time and provide some much needed relief to a back court that wore down as the season progressed in 2009-2010.
