Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney says he’s is ready for his guys to strap it on and get after an opponent on Saturday. McCarney says the Gator defensive line is in pretty good physical shape after 25 fall practices and a number of guys will play in the opening game against Miami (Ohio).

Dan McCarney knows that one of the biggest questions surrounding this team is whether or not the Gators can pressure opposing passers in the aftermath of losing their top two pass rushers in Carlos Dunlap and Jermaine Cunningham. He says the Gators simply have to get pressure on the passer, whether it comes from the DE or DT position. That challenge begins this week against RedHawks QB Zac Dysert who threw for 2,611 yards last season and is also a very effective runner.

McCarney also talks about playing a lot of guys Saturday, somewhere in the 10-12 range. He says three of them, Omar Hunter, Brandon Antwine and Dominique Easley will see playing time at nose guard and at least five defensive ends, including freshman Ronald Powell.

On his plan for utilizing the depth up front:

“We plan on using a lot of guys. I hope to see in the second or third quarter the Gators really jump on ‘em early. We’d like to see that, but I’m not waiting around for that. I’m going to rotate them regardless of the score.”

On the need for pass rush starting this week:

“Last year Miami of Ohio did a great job of throwing the ball about 275-280 yards a game and that’s strong at any place. Those same guys are all back so you know they’ll be better. We better get pressure on No. 4 (Dysert) or we’ll have a long day.”

On challenging DT to help provide more pressure on the QB:

“We challenged all of them. We all need to do that. If we want to continue to have (great) defense first of all you have to stop the run. We’ve been very effective, 95 yards a game since Urban came to Florida which is an amazing statistic. Beyond that every time that quarterback is back there and he’s effective throwing the ball we’ve got to get pressure. Whether it’s ‘edge’, whether it’s ‘games’, whether it’s ‘twist’, whether it’s ‘push’ or it’s bull rushers inside. Whoever it is we’ve got to collapse that pocket.”

On senior DE Justin Trattou:

“He’s been a warrior and a phenomenal player. He’s been a consistent guy who’s made a lot of game changing plays. He’s had a great career already but he’s playing better right now than at any time since I’ve been coaching him. We moved him to ‘Fox’ which is the same position Jermaine Cunningham played and when you lose a guy like that who made so many plays and was a second round draft pick you have some big shoes to fill, but in practice every day he seems to be doing a great job filling those shoes.”

On senior DT Brandon Antwine finally being healthy:

“It’s gratifying. It’s satisfying. It’s inspirational as I’ve always said about Brandon Antwine. He’s really playing good right now. I want to rotate those three guys and keep them all fresh. They’re all practicing well right now and hopefully fans will see that on Saturdays.”

On the ability to use Jaye Howard both at tackle and end:

“He’s (a) 300 pound (player) who’s a pretty good athlete. He came here as a ‘Fox’ and he grew into an end and now he’s grown into a tackle and that’s really his home. We can put him on the edge and play him out there because he does have good athleticism out there, but his home is inside.”

When McCarney mentioned the DE that will play he mentioned Kedric Johnson which might be the first time the redshirt freshman’s name has come up this fall. He did not mention Lerentee McCray who is also in the battle for that fifth spot in the rotation.

At tackle Omar Hunter and Jaye Howard will start with Antwine, Easley and Floyd in the mix. Seniors Terron Sanders and Lawrence Marsh are questionable for the contest with Sanders almost certain to miss the game.
