| Biography: |
| OUTLOOK: Although only a sophomore, he is already gaining recognition as one of the nation’s best offensive lineman. In 2001, he became only the third true freshman in UA history to start on the offensive line. He is a consensus preseason All-SEC offensive tackle and was named to Athlon Sports’ third team preseason All-America squad. The Sporting News ranked him as the No. 6 offensive tackle in the nation while Lindy’s Sports Annuals and Phil Steele’s College Football ranked him No. 9 and No. 11, respectively. He will once again anchor the UA front at right tackle in 2002.
2001: Only the third freshman in UA history to start on the offensive line, he started the last nine regular-season games and the 2002 Cotton Bowl at right tackle. He earned first-team freshman All-America honors from The Associated Press. In addition, he was named to the first team All-SEC freshmen squad by both league coaches and the Knoxville News-Sentinel. He was one of five true freshmen to play in all 11 regular season games. In the two games prior to his starting role, Arkansas averaged 103.0 yards of total offense. After he was inserted into the lineup, the Razorbacks averaged 373.0 yards in total offense in the final eight regular season contests. He allowed only one sack during the season and recorded a team-leading 46 knockdown blocks. He was a key component of a line that cleared the way for eight 100-yard rushing games. He earned eight knockdown blocks in Arkansas' 58-56 historic seven-overtime win over Ole Miss. The Hogs boasted three 100-yard rushing efforts and 521 yards of total offense against the Rebels. He recorded 13 knockdown blocks in a 42-17 win over No. 17 Auburn. He graded out at 87 percent against the Tigers including a 91 percent grade on passing plays. In an upset of No. 9 South Carolina, he registered eight knockdown blocks.
HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.4 seconds. He played in only six games during senior season due to back injury but still tallied 98 pancake blocks and an average grade of 88 percent on his blocking assignments. He averaged 16.3 pancake blocks per game and recorded 30 tackles and nine sacks on defense. He was a standout track athlete who competed in shot put and discus who was also recruited by Tennessee and Ole Miss.
FROM HIS POSITION COACH: Mike Markuson (offensive line) – “I think the biggest thing about Shawn is that he continues to improve in all areas. He is a gifted guy. The way gifted guys improve is to go out with a good work ethic and try to refine their game in every way they can. He is a natural. To be able to move like he does is unreal; it is something you don’t coach. His biggest thing is trying to keep his weight down. He is good with his hands. He just swallows people up.”
INSIDE INFORMATION: My favorite Razorback tradition is “the fight song.” Other than the seven-overtime victory at Ole Miss, my most memorable game is “Mississippi State because I had the chance to defeat a highly regarded opponent for the winning touchdown.” The team/player I am most looking forward to playing this year is “Tennessee.” If I could play in any college foot
