Sunshine State Loaded at Cornerback

Vernon Hargreaves

One of the most heavily recruited positions year in and year out in the Sunshine State is the cornerback position. With approximately 50 prospects expected to sign at the D-1 level, here are 10 of the best.

Mackensie Alexander, 5'11, 180, Immokalee(Committed to Tennessee)

Alexander Highlights

Alexander is one of the most physical corner's in the state and that is clearly on display with the way he plays the run on the edge. Loves to get physical at the line of scrimmage. Blessed with great instincts, Alexander is a player that thrives in man coverage. He is a pure corner that has worked very hard at his craft and projects to be one of the nations best at his position. We love his competitiveness and ability to rise to the challenge. Confident. He had some of his best games against top competition. Also an excellent punt returner.

Alexander is part of a tremendous group of prospects at Immokalee

John Franklin, 6'1, 175, South Plantation

Franklin Highlights

Franklin is a quarterback and a real good one. He has a chance to be recruited to that position, but we think his ceiling resides at cornerback. Long, fast, and athletic he has the tools to make the transition. Recently ran a 4.56 laser 40 at 6'0.5 with a 35 inch vertical. Franklin is on the lean side right now, but should add the weight easily in college. Playing with running back Alex Collins(commit to Miami) should help him get exposure. Could also be a WR or Safety.

Vernon Hargreaves, 5'11, 185, Tampa Wharton

Once in awhile a prospect comes along that is as close to perfect in technique as possible, this year that is Hargreaves. The son of a college coach(USF), it does not take long to marvel at his craft(like a senior in college). There is no question that he will make an early impact at the next level. Super smooth, physical, with natural cover instincts, Hargreaves is one of the best corners in the country. Outside of continuing to fill out physically(over 180), there is not a lot to work on. Doubles as a WR and makes plays there too. The big question on the recruiting trail is if he plays for his dad at USF or chooses to go in a different direction. He will have plenty of options.

William Likely, 5'7, 170, Glades Central

Likely Highlights

The Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida as a junior, it is hard to find a prospect in the 2013 class that made as many plays as Likely on both sides of the ball. He lacks ideal length, but there is no question that the athleticism is there for him to be a difference maker. A real competitor, Likely is known for lining up at both WR and CB at camps and challenging everyone there. He will make an impact on special teams at the next level.

Troy McCollum, 6'0, 165, North Miami

McCollum Highlights

Another long corner with all the tools is McCollum. Actually plays CB in high school which is a big bonus particularly in talent rich Dade County where he see's some of the best WRs in the country. Great hips, very fluid, and possesses good ball skills. McCollum to needs to stay focused, add weight, and get stronger. When he does those things, he is gonna be a terror for receivers to deal with. Recently is attracting major interest from all over the Southeast.

Sean Paul, 5'10, 180, Vero Beach

Paul Highlights

Paul is a player that reminds us of watching Jayron Hosley and Josh Robinson in high school. Both players flew a little under the radar, but are three and out to the NFL(VT and UCF respectively). Paul is put together and plays his edge very physically. Good coverage skills down the field. Makes a ton of plays on the ball. He is not a big name on the recruiting trail yet, but this Spring he should start to attract widespread attention.

White has a high ceiling at CB

Rashard Robinson. 6'2, 170, Pompano Beach Ely

The transfer from Deerfield Beach was one of the stars from the SouthFloridaExpress try-out and backed it up with some terrific combine numbers at Nike Miami last weekend(6'1.5, 162, 4.56, 33 vertical). Ideal size and length, Robinson can flip his hips and run. Robinson has received very little college interest at this time, but his will be a hot name in the Spring.

Sojourn Shelton, 5'9, 160, Plantation (Committed to FSU)

Shelton Highlights

Shelton lacks ideal size, but has outstanding feet, change of direction, and hips. He made a ton of plays last year including 6 interceptions. Pure cover corner where the big question is how big does he get. He has actually added a lot of strength and weight, but still is under-sized. Shelton is not afraid to compete. Put on a show at the Florida State camp earning an offer from his dream school.

Vonte White, 6'0, 175, Lehigh

White Highlights

White played a lot of QB as well as CB as a junior. He reminds us of Nick Waisome with the way he moves and his natural ability to cover. Loves to play man coverage. Does a great job of cutting off receivers down the field. White improved every game last year and he has responded with a strong off-season adding valuable strength. His school has produced some top CBs like Phillip Buchanan, Jeremy Ware, and Malik Simmons.

Jesus Wilson, 6'0, 170, Miami Christopher Columbus

Wilson Highlights

Wilson is better known as a wide receiver, but he is yet another prospect whose ceiling resides on the defensive side of the ball. Very long, Wilson is one of the fastest players in the state. Has done well against top competition which see's weekly in Dade County. It will be interesting to see where colleges recruit him and where he ultimately ends up.
