Durkin promoted to defensive coordinator

Florida head coach Will Muschamp didn't waste time. Just over an hour after former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn accepted the same job with the Seattle Seahawks, Muschamp promoted Florida linebackers coach D.J. Durkin to the defensive coordinator position for the Gators.

The hire brings stability to the Florida program, as the Gators haven't returned both coordinators since the 2008 season. The earliest that can happen again in the future will be the 2014 season.

D.J. Durkin is familiar with what Muschamp wants to do with the defense. Durkin was hired by Urban Meyer and came to Florida from Stanford before the 2010 season. When Muschamp took over the program, Durkin was held over and remained as the linebackers and special teams coach.

"D.J. and I will run the defense, continuing the way that Dan and I did for the past two years," Will Muschamp said. "We will look to add another coach that is the best fit for our staff moving forward."

Dan Quinn's departure to the Seattle Seahawks wasn't much of a surprise. His name was tossed out for defensive coordinator jobs with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars. When Gus Bradley was named the head coach in Jacksonville, it opened up defensive coordinator job in Seattle, where Quinn coached the defensive line for two seasons before taking the defensive coordinator job in Gainesville.

His name started to gain momentum during the 2012 season when the Florida defense improved throughout the year.

"I'm happy for Dan and this opportunity," Muschamp said. "I've said before that I always encourage my staff when opportunities arise to take the next step in their career. Dan's background is in the NFL, and this is a great chance to go back to a place he's familiar with."
